Marquette Women's Soccer Team Starts 2-0

This past weekend the Marquette Women's Soccer Squad kick started their season off at Valley Fields with back to back wins against Western Michigan (Friday night) and Northwestern (Sunday Night). Marquette won both contests by  final scores of 1-0, their 1-0 finish against Northwestern came in overtime.

On opening night at Valley, #12 Marquette came out aggressive and dominated possession for the entire first half. The first and only goal of the night would come in the 25th minute as sophomore Maegan Kelly blasted her 8th career goal past freshman GK Maddie Reed. Last season, Kelly was tied for the team lead with 7 goals along with Rachael Sloan and Kelly led the team in points with 18.  Friday night marked Maegan's first career start as a Marquette Golden Eagle.

Coincidentally, Marquette shut down the last years MAC offensive player of the year, Stephanie Skowneski. Last season Skowneski drilled 9 goals and assisted on 4 goals; she tallied 22 points for the season. However, the strong back-line of Ally Miller, Kate Hishmeh, Megan Jaskowiak, and reigning BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year Kerry McBride put the clamps down on Skowneski as she only tallied one shot all night long. The Marquette defense dominated the Broncos as they out-shot them 19-3.

Sunday night, the Northwestern Wildcats took the 80 mile trip up interstate 94 to Milwaukee for their season opener.  Both teams battled to a stalemate for 90 minutes and as the clock struck 9:30, overtime commenced at Valley. Making her season debut, senior Rachael Sloan played the ball up to fellow senior Lindsey Page and she fired a laser past Anna Cassell for the match winning goal in the games 94th minute.

Two games into the season, Marquette's record is unblemished, and Senior goalkeeper Natalie Kulla and the defense has put back to back shutouts on their 2011 resume. Kulla and the stingy defense of Marquette has held their opponents scoreless in the first 184 minutes of the season.
Marquette's next match is this Friday, August 26th as the Golden Eagles welcome the (1-0) St. Louis Billikens to Valley Fields at 7:30.
